Alexandre Dumas

Years: 1802–1870Country: FrancePrimary language: French

Alexandre Dumas was a French writer and one of the great masters of historical adventure, turning the past into a dazzling stage of honour, betrayal, loyalty, and revenge. In The Three Musketeers and The Count of Monte Cristo, he created stories driven by quick dialogue, dangerous plots, and characters who live with irresistible energy. His vast body of work includes novels, plays, memoirs, travel writing, and countless pages written with astonishing speed and theatrical flair. Dumas himself was every bit as larger-than-life as his heroes: sociable, extravagant, fond of travel, fine food, and grand gestures. He earned fortunes, spent them freely, and seemed to treat life itself as one more adventure waiting to be written.
