Bram Stoker was an Irish writer and theatre manager who gave Gothic horror one of its most enduring figures: Count Dracula. In Dracula, his most famous novel, he shaped the story through journals, letters, newspaper clippings, and reports, making the supernatural feel chillingly close to documented fact. He also wrote other novels, short stories, and darkly adventurous works, though none escaped the enormous shadow of his Transylvanian vampire. Curiously, Stoker did not spend most of his life as a reclusive architect of nightmares, but as a highly practical man in the busy world of London theatre. Managing the career of the great actor Henry Irving may have taught him one unforgettable lesson: few things are more powerful than a perfectly timed entrance.
