Charles Dickens

Years: 1812–1870Country: United KingdomPrimary language: English

Charles Dickens was a British writer and one of the great architects of the social novel, turning poverty, injustice, and the restless energy of Victorian London into fiction that still pulses with life. In works such as Oliver Twist, David Copperfield, Great Expectations, and A Christmas Carol, he created unforgettable characters with sharp observation, theatrical force, and deep human sympathy. His output included novels, short stories, journalism, essays, and hugely popular public readings that made him one of literature’s earliest modern celebrities. Though he became a powerful voice for neglected children and the poor, Dickens knew that world from within: as a boy, he was sent to work in a blacking factory. That private wound became part of his genius — the ability to see, behind every crowded street, a human soul asking to be noticed.
