Elizabeth Cleghorn Gaskell
Elizabeth Cleghorn Gaskell was a British novelist who brought to Victorian literature a deeply humane understanding of family, class, and the changing world of industrial England. In North and South, Cranford, and Mary Barton, she wrote with quiet empathy about women, workers, middle-class respectability, and the tension between feeling and social duty. Her work includes novels, short stories, novellas, and a biography of Charlotte Brontë, where literary friendship meets the pressures placed on women writers. Although she could portray factory smoke, poverty, and social unrest with striking clarity, Gaskell was also a wife, mother, and minister’s wife rooted in domestic life. That combination gives her fiction its particular strength: a tenderness that does not look away from injustice.
