Gaston Leroux was a French writer and journalist who blended detective logic, Gothic atmosphere, and theatrical spectacle into fiction charged with mystery and dark romance. In The Phantom of the Opera, he created Erik, the tragic figure haunting the hidden spaces beneath the Paris Opera, in a story that moves between horror, melodrama, and almost journalistic precision. His work also includes numerous detective, adventure, and fantastic novels, among them The Mystery of the Yellow Room, one of the classic locked-room mysteries. Before he became a novelist of phantoms and crimes, Leroux worked as a reporter, close to courtrooms, scandals, and real criminal cases. Perhaps that is where he learned that the strongest mysteries do not feel impossible — they feel dangerously plausible.
