Gustave Flaubert

Years: 1821–1880Country: FrancePrimary language: French

Gustave Flaubert was a French novelist and one of the great stylists of realism, convinced that the exact sentence could matter as much as the story itself. In Madame Bovary, he created Emma Bovary and a world of provincial longing, boredom, and self-deception, written with cool precision, irony, and extraordinary control. His work includes novels, short fiction, historical prose, travel writing, and a vast correspondence that reveals his obsession with finding *le mot juste* — the one exact word. Flaubert wrote slowly, tested his sentences aloud, and could spend days refining a single page. That may be why his prose feels so effortless: its apparent ease was built on almost obsessive discipline.
