Harriet Beecher Stowe was an American writer and one of the most influential literary voices against slavery, turning moral conviction into fiction that could stir a nation’s conscience. In Uncle Tom’s Cabin, she created the gentle, suffering figure of Tom and a cast of characters written with emotional force, religious urgency, and a clear sense of human injustice. Her work includes novels, short stories, essays, travel writing, and social commentary, often shaped by questions of family, faith, and dignity. Although she is remembered above all for one groundbreaking book, Stowe was a prolific writer and the mother of a large household, often composing amid the pressures of domestic life.
