James Stephens

Years: 1880–1950Country: IrelandPrimary language: English

James Stephens was an Irish writer and poet associated with the Irish Literary Revival, blending folklore, philosophy, and playful imagination into a distinctly lyrical world. In The Crock of Gold and in his retellings of Irish legend, he wrote with humour, poetry, and an unusual mixture of wisdom and whimsy. His work includes novels, short stories, poetry, essays, translations, and writing shaped by Gaelic tradition. Though he came from a poor background and began his working life as a clerk, Stephens became an important figure in Ireland’s literary culture and later a close friend of James Joyce. Joyce trusted him so deeply that he even considered Stephens as someone who might complete Finnegans Wake if he himself could not.
