Jean-Jacques Rousseau

Years: 1712–1778Country: SwitzerlandPrimary language: French

Jean-Jacques Rousseau was a Genevan writer and philosopher who wrote about freedom, education, and human nature with a strikingly personal intensity. In The Confessions, Émile, and The Social Contract, he brought large social questions close to lived experience, emotion, and doubt. His work includes philosophy, autobiography, fiction, essays, writings on music, and extensive correspondence. Rousseau was sensitive, combative, and often at odds with the people around him, yet he remained driven by the search for a more honest and freer way to live. That is why his work rarely feels like cold philosophy: it reads instead like a restless conversation between one man, his conscience, and the world around him.
