John Galsworthy

Years: 1867–1933Country: United KingdomPrimary language: English

John Galsworthy was a British novelist and playwright who captured the world of property, family ambition, and moral compromise with remarkable precision. In The Forsyte Saga, he created a sweeping family chronicle written with irony, psychological insight, and a sharp sense of the price people pay for social security and respectability. His work includes novels, short stories, plays, and essays, many of them concerned with inequality, law, marriage, and personal responsibility. Although Galsworthy came from a prosperous background and knew the society he portrayed from within, he became increasingly preoccupied with questions of justice and human dignity. That tension gives his fiction much of its force: he writes about privilege as someone who understands its comforts, but also its limits.
