Person

John Milton

Years: 1608–1674Country: United KingdomPrimary language: English

John Milton was an English poet, thinker, and one of the great masters of epic verse, bringing biblical imagination, political conviction, and extraordinary verbal power into a single monumental voice. In Paradise Lost, he created a vast drama of human fall, Satanic rebellion, and lost innocence, written in a grand, dense, and unmistakably musical style. His work includes poetry, political and religious prose, polemics, and essays shaped by recurring questions of liberty, faith, and conscience. Later in life Milton became blind, yet he continued to compose and dictated his poetry from memory. The image of a blind poet creating one of the most magnificent works in European literature from within darkness remains one of the most striking paradoxes of his life.
