Kenneth Grahame

Kenneth Grahame was a Scottish-British writer who brought tenderness, humour, and a deep love of the English countryside into children’s literature. In The Wind in the Willows, he created Mole, Rat, Badger, and the gloriously self-important Mr Toad, writing their adventures with gentle irony, lyrical charm, and a quiet understanding of the pull between home and freedom. His work also includes stories, essays, and childhood pieces in which imagination is often touched by nostalgia. Although his fiction feels leisurely and full of open air, Grahame spent much of his life in the disciplined routine of the Bank of England. Perhaps that is why he could imagine so vividly a world where the greatest adventure might begin with a riverbank, a friend, and an unhurried afternoon.
