Mark Twain

Years: 1835–1910Country: United StatesPrimary language: English

Mark Twain was an American writer, humorist, and master of narrative voice who gave American literature a new freedom through vernacular speech, irony, and a wonderfully rebellious view of the world from below. In The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, he created boyhood heroes full of mischief, movement, and adventure, while quietly exposing the injustices beneath the surface of everyday life. His work includes novels, short stories, travel writing, essays, satire, and celebrated lectures in which laughter often sharpens into social criticism. Before becoming a literary icon, he worked as a printer, journalist, and steamboat pilot on the Mississippi, where he found both his pen name and his ear for the current of spoken language. Behind the comic mask was a brilliant skeptic who could make an audience laugh while gently forcing it to look in the mirror.
