Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley was a British writer whose imagination gave literature one of its most enduring modern myths and helped lay the foundations of science fiction. In Frankenstein, she created the ambitious scientist who dares to make life and the lonely being he abandons, in a story that fuses Gothic atmosphere, philosophical unease, and a warning against human pride. Her work includes novels, short stories, travel writing, essays, biographical sketches, and the careful editing of Percy Bysshe Shelley’s literary legacy. Although she is often remembered as the young woman who conceived Frankenstein near Lake Geneva, her life was marked by loss, uncertainty, and extraordinary intellectual courage. Perhaps that is why the novel still cuts so deeply: it is not only a tale of a monster, but of a soul desperate to be seen and loved.
