Nathaniel Hawthorne

Nathaniel Hawthorne was an American writer and a master of darkly moral fiction, bringing guilt, secrecy, and the burden of Puritan history into the literature of New England. In The Scarlet Letter, he created Hester Prynne, a woman marked by sin yet defined by extraordinary inner strength, in a novel written with symbolic precision, moral depth, and quiet intensity. His work includes novels, short stories, children’s tales, essays, and notebooks, all returning again and again to conscience, hidden wrongdoing, and the frailty of the human soul. Although he wrote so powerfully about inherited guilt, Hawthorne also carried a shadow from his own family past: one of his ancestors had been a judge in the Salem witch trials. Perhaps that is why his fiction feels like a long conversation with darkness — the kind that cannot be silenced simply by forgetting it.
