Person
Walter Scott
Walter Scott was a Scottish writer, poet, and one of the founders of the historical novel, turning the past into a vivid world of clashing traditions, loyalties, and human destinies. In Ivanhoe, Waverley, and Rob Roy, he blended adventure, romance, and historical tension with a remarkable gift for atmosphere. His work includes novels, long narrative poems, ballads, essays, and historical writing, and it helped shape the course of nineteenth-century European fiction. Despite becoming a literary celebrity, he published many of his novels anonymously for years as “the Author of Waverley.” Later, when financial collapse left him deeply in debt, Scott chose to write his way out of it — with a determination almost as dramatic as the stories he created.
