Person

Wilkie Collins

Years: 1824–1889Country: United KingdomPrimary language: English

Wilkie Collins was a British novelist and a pioneer of sensation and detective fiction, turning secrets, inheritance, hidden identities, and suspicion into finely controlled literary suspense. In The Woman in White and The Moonstone, he combined intricate plotting, shifting narrators, and gradual revelation in ways that helped shape the later detective novel. His work includes dozens of novels, short stories, plays, and journalistic pieces, often concerned with crime, social hypocrisy, and the failures of law and convention. Collins was a close friend and occasional collaborator of Charles Dickens, though his own private life was far less conventional than the respectable Victorian world around him. Behind the polished surfaces of his fiction stands a writer who understood that the most compelling mysteries are often the ones society would rather keep hidden.
