Person

William Hope Hodgson

Years: 1877–1918Country: United KingdomPrimary language: English

William Hope Hodgson was a British writer and an early master of weird fiction who turned the sea, isolation, and unknowable forces into something more terrifying than any conventional ghost. In The House on the Borderland, The Night Land, and his sea stories, he created worlds of cosmic dread, lost ships, and creatures lurking beyond the limits of human understanding. His work includes novels, short stories, poetry, and the Carnacki tales about an investigator of supernatural mysteries. Hodgson knew the maritime world firsthand: as a young man he spent years at sea and came to hate the harshness of a sailor’s life. The writer who made the vast ocean so frightening eventually died as a soldier in the First World War, long before later generations fully recognized the strange power of his imagination.
