About the author
Maurice Leblanc was a French writer who gave detective and adventure fiction one of its most irresistible figures: the gentleman thief Arsène Lupin. In Lupin’s exploits, he created a hero of elegance, wit, and playful audacity, a criminal who steals with style and slips through the hands of both the police and polite society. Leblanc wrote numerous novels, short stories, and plays, but the Lupin cycle became the work that secured his lasting fame. Ironically, he had once hoped to be recognized for more serious literary fiction, and at times seemed to regard his charming burglar as a gilded cage. Yet Arsène Lupin stole even his creator’s destiny — and did it with such grace that readers have been forgiving him ever since.
