About the author
Washington Irving was an American writer, essayist, and diplomat who helped give early American literature a distinctive voice between European tradition and the stories of the New World. In Rip Van Winkle and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, he created tales shaped by gentle irony, folkloric mystery, and a softly haunted sense of place. His work includes short stories, essays, travel sketches, historical writing, and biographies, making him one of the first American authors to gain lasting recognition on both sides of the Atlantic. Although he is often associated with sleepy villages, local legends, and mist over the Hudson River, Irving himself lived a remarkably international life between America, England, and Spain. Perhaps that distance helped him write about home so vividly — with the tenderness of someone who had often seen it from afar.
