About the author
L. Frank Baum was an American writer who gave children’s literature a bright, modern fairy tale with a distinctly American spirit, free from the old castles and kings of Europe. In The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, he created Dorothy, the Scarecrow, the Tin Woodman, and the Cowardly Lion in a story full of charm, invention, and the gentle belief that courage, heart, and wisdom may already be hidden within us. His work includes dozens of children’s books, many Oz sequels, short stories, plays, and fiction published under several pseudonyms. Before he found the road to Oz, Baum tried his hand at acting, business, journalism, and even poultry breeding. Perhaps that is why his magical country feels so alive: it was imagined by a man who knew the setbacks of ordinary life, yet never quite gave up on wonder.
