Arthur Conan Doyle was a British author of Scottish origin and a physician by training. He laid the foundations of the modern detective story and created one of the most iconic literary duos, Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson. In addition to several collections of detective tales and four detective novels, he also wrote other fiction, including the science‑fiction adventure The Lost World. Doyle contributed to the establishment of the Court of Appeal and was a passionate advocate of spiritualism.
