Edgar Rice Burroughs

Years: 1875–1950Country: United StatesPrimary language: English

Edgar Rice Burroughs was an American writer of adventure and fantastic fiction who gave the pulp era some of its most enduring heroes. In the Tarzan stories and the Barsoom series, he created worlds of jungles, lost civilizations, alien planets, and fearless adventurers, written with speed, directness, and an infectious appetite for danger. His work includes dozens of novels and stories across adventure, science fiction, fantasy, and western fiction. Before becoming a successful author, Burroughs tried many occupations and began writing partly because he believed he could do at least as well as the popular magazine fiction he was reading. That practical experiment led, unexpectedly, to Tarzan — a character who would become even more famous than the man who created him.
