William Shakespeare

Years: 1564–1616Country: United KingdomPrimary language: English

William Shakespeare was an English playwright, poet, and actor who transformed the stage into a living mirror of ambition, love, jealousy, wit, power, and despair. In Hamlet, Romeo and Juliet, Macbeth, Othello, and A Midsummer Night’s Dream, he created characters of such psychological depth and verbal brilliance that they still feel startlingly alive. His work includes dozens of plays, sonnets, and other poems, ranging from tragedies and comedies to histories and late romances. Yet despite becoming the most famous name in world drama, Shakespeare left behind surprisingly few traces of his private self. Perhaps that mystery is part of his power: the man recedes into shadow, while his kings, fools, lovers, and murderers keep speaking under the lights.
